Bonne Nuit Playing A Live Gig

Every live band wants to be the best band that they can be. I’ve seen so many bands that practice, practice, practice and never really feel ready to get out and play a gig. I’ve seen bands begin and end in the practice studio without ever getting out and playing a live show. The biggest reason for this is the fact that the band never feels ready to get out and play a gig. So they practice and practice until they’re bored and then they end up giving up.

One of the biggest truths I’ve discovered in my years playing in live bands is that there is nothing like having a gig on the calender to make your band improve. If you’re practicing and you don’t have any shows scheduled then you’re missing some very much needed motivation. A gig deadline will force your band to get down to the essentials needed to perform a live show. You’ll stop wasting time at practice working on every little detail and focus on what needs to get done to play your upcoming gig. The arguing about what songs to learn will stop as you decide on a final set list for your show. It will be time for every member to commit the time needed for rehearsals and personal practice in order for the gig to happen. Nobody likes to look bad onstage and that will help your band keep it’s focus as you prepare for your gig.

After you play a gig you’ll have a reference point for where the band really needs to improve. You’ll know which of your songs didn’t go over well onstage. You’ll know what kind of stage showmanship the band will need to practice. You’ll also hear your band improve simply because you successfully played an entire gig from start to finish. The more gigs you play, the better your band will become because it’s virtually impossible to simulate the gig experience in the practice studio. That’s why I’m telling you that gigging is the best way to improve your live band.

So my advice today is to get out and schedule any gig you can get. Even if that means playing for free at your cousin’s birthday party. Having that deadline will make your band better.

In Stereo Started Out Sounding Like A Train Wreck

So you’ve searched for musicians, finally found a the perfect band lineup, and you’ve decided what type of music you want to play with your live band. You’ve had a few band practices but your new live band sounds like a train wreck. This is a common problem and believe it or not, can be very simple to solve.

The first question you have to answer is, what’s causing your band to sound like a train wreck. The most common problems I’ve seen in new bands are centered around the ability to play to a beat and individual player preparation.

Let’s talk about the ability to play to a beat first. I’m sure you’ve heard a guitarist who is simply amazing to listen to when he’s sitting around and jamming alone on his guitar. He can bust out Eruption note-for-note along with some seriously sweet riffage. But put him with a drummer and a bass player and he falls apart. This is common among musicians who haven’t played in a band before. They are used to being able to flex the beat to match what they’re playing because they don’t have to stay in sync with other musicians. In a live band, if everyone is trying to flex the beat a different way, then the band sounds like a train wreck.

This problem can be easily solved by having the individual players practice with a metronome or a drum machine. If players who are inexperienced playing with other people will take the time to practice with a metronome, they will develop the ability to play with a steady beat. That’s the most important thing for making a band sound tight, that ability of everyone staying together on the same beat.

Next is individual player preparation. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, band practice is not the time to learn your part in a song! Each player needs to take the time alone to listen and learn their individual part before coming to band practice. If a player doesn’t know the chord changes or solo’s, then your band is going to sound like a train wreck while that player searches for the right parts. Not preparing before band practice is a sure way to kill your band’s sound.

It’s a lot easier to work on staying on the beat together when everyone has learned their individual parts. Using a metronome at band practice can go a long way toward tightening your band up as well. Just plug a metronome into your mixer, set the click to the song tempo and have the band play along with the metronome. Remember, staying together on the beat is the most important aspect of keeping your band from sounding like a train wreck.

One of the most neglected aspects I’ve seen with live bands over the years is the backing vocals. I’ve seen plenty of bands that have an excellent lead singer or even multiple lead singers that nail the lead vocals every time. But they are severely lacking in the backing vocals. Too many bands just don’t take the time to learn and then fix problems with their backing vocals.

I’ve written many times on Live Musician Central that the ability to sing is crucial to your skills as a band musician. It’s up to you as an individual player to take ownership of singing backup vocals in your band. Along with your regular, personal practice on your instrument you need to take the time to practice your backing vocals. I often practice my singing while I’m driving as it’s something I can do without my hands. Make sure you take the time to learn your individual backing vocal part before you have a band rehearsal.

The next step in getting your backup vocals in shape as a band is to have a dedicated, Vocals only band practice. Set aside at least one practice a month to work solely on the band’s backup vocals. If your band really struggles with singing backup vocals then you’ll want to have a dedicated vocal practice more often. Spend the entire practice working on vocals only.

When working on vocals it’s a good idea to have a keyboard handy to help you pick out individual parts. Using a keyboard is an easy way to isolate individual vocal parts and help the weaker singers to find and follow their part. With a keyboard you can hear how the parts should all sound together. You can also use a guitar to strum chords while the band practices vocals. This will help you hear how the vocal parts fit in with the chordal harmony.

When rehearsing vocals in my band, the first thing we do is find all of our vocal parts using a keyboard. Then we’ll make sure each individual singer can sing his part. After that, we’ll strum the guitar and have everyone sing their vocal parts with the guitar. Finally, we’ll sing everything Acapella to make sure that everyone is listening to each other and singing in tune with each other. It’s honestly a great feeling when vocal harmonies come together because they sound so awesome when sung well!

It’s also a great idea to practice backup vocals for a few minutes every single band practice. It warms up the band member’s voices and helps get everyone focusing on singing. If you have a song that everyone struggles with, give it extra attention. Practice those vocal parts before and after you play the problem song as a band. By following these simple steps and having a dedicated vocal practice, your band will easily separate itself from all the bands out there that are lacking in the vocal department. Your band will be the one getting the most gigs!

The other day I wrote a post about joining a band by answering Musician Wanted ads. Naturally the next step in the process is going to the audition so that’s what we’ll discuss today. I’ve played in a lot of live bands over the years and been to my share of live band auditions too. Auditions are always an interesting process and I’ve always learned something going through the band audition process. Today I’m going to give you a few tips on preparing to audition for a live band.

The first thing you want to do is make sure you have the correct address for where the audition is going to be held. I remember once getting so lost going to an audition that I was an hour late. Needless to say, it didn’t make a good impression and I didn’t get the gig. Get directions and a phone number you can call in case you get lost or you get stuck in traffic.

Which brings me to my second tip, be on time. Showing up late to an audition is the ultimate way to show you don’t care about being a part of the band. If you have a lot of equipment to set up then you should ask if you can show up a few minutes early. Don’t just show up early because you’ll look a little too eager which isn’t cool for a musician. But if you let the people know you have extra equipment to set up then they’ll appreciate you asking if you can show up early to set up.

The next tip is, don’t bring any unnecessary equipment. It’s a good idea to ask what equipment you should bring to the audition. Just bring along what you will need to complete the audition. Believe me, you don’t want to be stuck setting up and tearing down for an hour if everyone is uncomfortable with each other.

Don’t bring your best equipment either, especially if you’re auditioning for people you’ve never met before. If you have a vintage collectors Les Paul, you should leave it home and just bring your Les Paul Studio guitar. You never know when you may run into some unscrupulous types that may want to relieve you of your best equipment.

Make sure you know how to play the songs you are going to audition on. If you’ve been told “just come over and we’ll jam on something” I can guarantee you that the band is completely unorganized. If you just show up and jam on 12-bar blues for an hour, that’s not a lot to go on when choosing musicians to form a band. You have to remember that you’re auditioning the band as much as you are being auditioned. You’ll want to hear how the other musicians learn their individual parts and function together as a band. That’s why it’s a necessary to choose at least 3 songs that everyone will know to have the audition.

Remember to relax and have fun! Whether you get in the band or not, at least you’re getting the chance to play with some new musicians. It’s always a learning experience to get with some other musicians and see how they do things. It’s good to see how the members interact with each other. If you’re in a band, you will be spending a lot of time together so pay attention to how everyone is getting along.

When the audition is over, ask them what they thought. They may tell you that they’ll call you and let you know. It’s a good idea to say something to the effect of “If I don’t hear from you in a week, can I call to find out if you’ve filled the position?”. Auditions are a lot like job interviews that way and it’s important that you follow up.

Good luck out there, and keep on Rockin’! -Matt-

Kent, Matt and Erik Rolling Up Gig Hours

I recently had a discussion with a good friend about how the 10,000 hour rule applies to musicians that play in a live band. If you haven’t heard of the 10,000 hour rule it simply states that if you spend 10,000 hours of deliberate practice on something you will become an expert. Deliberate practice being defined as a focused study and application of a skill or subject. If you’ve been working at your job for 10 years then you’re most likely an expert as 10 years job experience roughly translates into 10,000 hours of deliberate practice at your job.

I’m sure that if you’ve been doing the same job for 10 years that your co-workers probably consider you an expert at whatever your job function is. The same thing can be said for musicians. I’ve been playing in live bands for 28 years now and I have become an expert at playing in live bands through experience. I’ve put my 10,000 hours in by practicing my instrument, preparing for live performances, setting up, tearing down and hauling equipment. I’ve put the hours in working with agents, club managers and other musicians. I’ve put the hours in mixing sound, programming sound patches and running amplification.

I guess to answer the title of this blog post, “How To Become An Expert Musician”, you simply have to do the job and start putting in your 10,000 hours. It may sound overwhelming for someone starting out playing in their first band but it’s really fun and exciting. There are 3 simple steps to do to start becoming an expert musician.

Learn how to play an instrument well enough to play your part in a band.

Get together with other musicians and form a band that can play complete songs together.

Book a gig and get out there and play it!

Okay, each step is quite a bit more involved and you’ll have to solve a lot of problems and learn a lot of things to get out there and play a gig. But that’s how you collect your 10,000 hours, by solving the problems related to being able to play a gig.

One thing that I’d like you all to remember is that you don’t have to be a master at something to be an expert. For example, if you play your guitar for 10,000 hours you may still not be the best guitarist in the world but you will certainly have the knowledge and skill to play the guitar at a very high level. In fact I would say that you will certainly be an expert on the electric guitar if you practice it for 10,000 hours. The most important thing to do is to start!

Matt Rushton Playing A Live Gig

I’m a guitarist who has been playing for almost 30 years now and I’ve played in live bands almost that entire time. The reason I play is simple, I love to play in front of live audiences. Some things I love about it are the feedback I get from an excited crowd as well as the joy that comes with really nailing the music when the band is playing well.

I’ve played a lot of different styles of music over the years. I’ve played primarily rock-n-roll but I’ve also played country, jazz, pop, electronic and other styles that don’t really fit into any category at all. I’ve played in original bands playing my own music as well as backing up other artists who write their songs. I’ve played in cover bands with all kinds of lineups from two-piece bands all the way up to full size big bands. I’ve also spent time playing in pit orchestras for live stage plays.

So why have I played in so many bands covering so many styles? Because there was a gig involved. There was a chance for me, playing in every one of these styles and settings, to get up and perform in front of a live audience. If there’s a chance to perform a gig, I’ll take that chance. For me as a performer the ultimate payoff for all the hours of practicing and dedication is to get up and perform.

What is so rewarding about playing live gigs? Honestly, it’s the feedback that I get from the audience about my playing. Way back when I started playing it was about getting girls of course. But as time went on playing gigs became a type of artistic validation. Even when I’ve played a show for a handful of people the feedback I get from the audience is what drives me to improve my skills.

I’ve learned that when I don’t have a gig scheduled that I don’t practice as much. I stop playing my guitar and start doing other things like playing video games or watching DVD’s. It’s essential to have a goal for me to achieve in order to motivate me to keep working on my craft as a musician. I’m also a competitive runner and I’ve found the same thing to be true about running. When I have a race scheduled I train a lot harder and keep my body running at peak efficiency.

So that’s why I say that playing any gig is better than playing no gig at all. I’ve had a lot of fun as well as diverse experiences playing some really interesting gigs over the years. It’s these gigs that have kept me in the game and playing music. So my advice to you is, if you are presented with an opportunity to play a gig, take it! Even if it’s playing for your daughter’s pre-school class. It will get you to practice and that will make you a better musician.

Improve Your Lead Vocals With Cross-Training

Singing is one of the most basic and essential skills in any live band. If you play an instrument, having the ability to sing will give you the multiple skills to make you a more valuable member of the band. It’s really in your own best interest to develop your singing skills as much as possible

As you know, singing is controlled by the muscles in your throat and the muscles that control your breathing. Any athlete knows that training the correct muscles will give you stamina and greater power. This is also true with your voice. As you train these muscles you’ll be able to sing better, longer and with more vocal range.

Another truth that any athlete knows is that cross-training muscles is an excellent way to increase those muscles abilities. The same is true with singing. If you are a lead singer and all you ever do is sing in the upper ranges of your voice you’ve probably noticed that you struggle singing parts that are in the lower ranges of your voice. The same is true if you only sing in the low range of your voice. You’ll struggle when you go to hit those high notes. That’s where the concept of cross-training your voice comes in.

One of the easiest ways I’ve found to cross-train my voice is to donate 1 hour a week to my local choir. I sing in my church choir and by doing so I’m able to sing music and styles that I would never have a chance to sing in my live band. I have a high tenor voice and I sing extremely high lead vocals in my band. My highest ranges are very powerful and I can really belt it out.

Choir music on the other hand is more difficult for me because even the tenor parts are written lower than where I usually sing in the band. This gives me a chance to stretch out and use the lower ranges of my voice. I also sing melody lines that are unusual and that you just don’t find in modern rock-n-roll music. This challenges my voice to sing in ranges that I don’t normally sing in with the band. It’s really great practice for my voice!

I’ve noticed that I am able to sing better when I sing in the band because I donate a little time to my local choir. The choir is happy because they are always looking for people to sing and it’s paying off for my voice when I sing with my band. It’s a win-win situation for me and the choit. Singing with the choir is an easy way to cross-train your voice and it’s also a great way to meet other singers and musicians.

There are all kinds of choirs out there that are looking for singers. You have opportunities in church choirs, community choirs, neighborhood choirs and school choirs. I highly recommend singing in one of these groups as it will increase your skills as a musician. -Matt-

Seiko DM70 Pocket Metronome

One of the biggest problems I’ve seen in my years of playing in a live band is the ability to keep a solid, steady tempo. If your band is speeding up and slowing down all the time, it’s darn near impossible to keep a danceable groove going. It’s primarily the responsibility of the drummer, bass player and rhythm guitarist to keep the tempo but everyone benefits when the entire band can hold a solid tempo.

The best way I’ve found to practice keeping a solid tempo is using a metronome. The obvious way to practice is to set the metronome to a tempo that you want to work on and then practice along with it. This is a very basic way to use the metronome but it’s not the best way I’ve found to use it for improving your ability to hold a tempo.

The best way I’ve found to improve your tempo is to set the metronome to click only on the first beat of each measure. That way it’s up to you to hold down the tempo for the rest of the beats. This is something that you can work up to by first practicing with the metronome clicking on every beat. Then set the metronome to click on every other beat and practice with that setting until you’re good at it. Finally set the metronome to click only on beat 1 of every measure and practice holding the tempo along with the metronome.

For example if you are working with a tempo of 100 Beats Per Minute then start out with the metronome set to 100 bpm. Then, set the metronome to 50 bpm while continuing to play at 100 bpm. Finally, if your metronome will go this slow, set it to 25 bpm and keep your tempo at 100 bpm. As you’ll see, it takes some concentration to keep your tempo even when the metronome is only clicking on beat 1 of every measure.

Having a good, even tempo is critical for making top level music. By using this practice method with a metronome you will gain the ability to hold a much more even tempo when you play. So get that metronome out, and get practicing!

Sammy Hagar Became A More Complete Musician After He Left Montrose

I’ve been playing in live bands for 27 years now and I’ve been through my share of band breakups. By band breakup, I mean either the the group will completely disband or I have quit a band that I felt wasn’t going anywhere. It’s always a bummer when your time in a band comes to an end but it’s also an opportunity to re-examine why you are playing music and what you hope to do with your skills as a musician.

I remember when my first band broke up. I had been playing with Seniors in High School and I was just a Freshman. They all graduated High School and that was pretty much the end of the band. I knew I wanted to keep playing but my skills were extremely limited at the time and I had no clue how to even go about getting into another band. I did know a couple of things though, I knew I had a deep love of music and that I wanted to become a better guitarist. So I immersed myself in the study of music theory and the guitar.

I grew incredibly as a musician while I was between my first and second bands. I learned a lot of new guitar skills as I played music with several guitarists and talked with them about the instrument. I read every book about guitar and music theory I could get my hands on and I played guitar in the High School Jazz Band which filled the void left after my first rock band had called it quits.

The next year I moved to a new city. I met a whole new group of musicians and I was able to put together another really fun and exciting rock band. I still play music with some of the guys from the second rock band I was ever in. My point is, I kept playing even though I didn’t have a band. I continued practicing and growing as a musician and a guitarist. That prepared me for my next band and it made that band even better than the previous one.

It’s extremely important that you keep growing musically between bands. My role as a musician has always been as a performer first and it’s difficult for me to find motivation when I’m not in a band. Yet those are the times I’ve discovered new aspects about my instrument and my talent. When I’m in a band I tend to focus my energy on what will help the band to be successful. When I’m not in a band, I explore the entire world of music and I often discover things ignite a new passion about music. What I learn as I explore that new passion always ends up helping me in my next band.

When my second band broke up, I discovered multi-track recording and I was able to spend time honing my skills as a songwriter while learning the world of Home Studio recording. Playing and recording music in my studio can be very rewarding and definitely fills the void I feel when I’m not actively playing out in a band. In fact, there are times when I’m in a band that I wish I could just sit home and make recordings of my original work! But of course, the pull of the stage is too strong for me to ignore at least for now.

Between bands I have become a better guitarist, learned and honed my studio engineering and production skills, learned how to make computer based music and even learned how to play various horns and ethnic instruments. I have always tried to learn and grow as a general practitioner of music between bands and this has kept me interested and “in the business” for all these years.

So remember, if your band breaks up, it’s not the end of the music experience. It’s really just a starting point for increasing your musical horizons. The thing you want to do is to keep on playing, studying and creating music. You’ll find another band that will take your time and you’ll also reap the rewards for the time you spent learning between band experiences. -Matt-

Bad Singers Debate

Bob Dylan - Good Singer or Bad Singer?

Today I’m going to address a topic that is a personal pet peeve of mine. I personally don’t like labeling artists as either “Good” or “Bad”. That goes for anybody that creates a work of art including painters, writers, musicians or any other person that creates something from nothing. Art is subjective and what’s beautiful to one person, may seem ugly to another. But, my real pet peeve is the labeling of something as unique as an individual human voice as either “Good” or “Bad”. The sad thing is that I hear comments from the crowd about good vs. bad singing every time I watch a live band play.

The reason this bothers me so much is the fact that no two individual voices are the same. Your voice is the one truly unique instrument you possess. There is no possible way to sound “exactly” like someone else. This has been proven by computer voiceprint analysis. Voices are unique and this presents a huge problem in the labeling of a “Good” or a “Bad” singer.

The only way to even begin to label a singer as either good or bad is to have a pre-determined set of criteria that would define a good singer. For example let’s say the criteria for a good singer would be the ability to sing in tune, hold the pitch, have proper pronunciation of the lyrics, and project their voice at a certain volume level. Using this criteria we can say that Bob Dylan is a “Bad” singer since he does none of the aforementioned criteria. Yet he has sold millions of recordings and his singing has evoked an emotional response directly as a result of his singing.

I’m not trying to make the argument that Bob Dylan is a good singer but I am saying that his singing is touching millions of people. One of the reasons he is successful is because his voice is unique and he is using that uniqueness to deliver his songs. I say it’s at least unfair to label Bob as a “Bad” singer when he is only being himself. The key is getting an emotional response from others when you sing.

Let’s take a look at the American Idol phenomenon which represents the dregs of the Good Singer Vs. Bad Singer debate. It’s fascinating to watch season after season as some very unique singers get trashed to pieces because of their “lack of talent”. Take William Hung for example, he is technically not a good singer at all. But William is a case of a ”he’s so bad, he’s good!” style singer. I think that in some weird way, his honesty comes through on his album that he is trying his best to sing from his heart.

In the end, even American Idol voting comes down to which individual voice the voters prefer. The final singers all have the ability to sing at a level that would meet the technical criteria of a “Good” singer. The winner is the person that draws the biggest emotional response from the voters. That’s all Bob Dylan does when he makes an album sale but I doubt Bob would win American Idol.

My point is, don’t be afraid to use the most unique musical instrument you will ever possess. Nobody will ever have your voice so you may as well sing the best you can and get out there and share it. One of the most important things I looked for when putting my band In Stereo together is that everyone in the band was not afraid to sing. We all sing and it really makes our band more unique than the rest. Even if you aren’t the lead singer, singing backup can completely change the sound of your band for the better.

If someone tells you that you’re a “bad” singer then just shrug it off. They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about obviously. Just keep singing and working on your pitch and the ability to sing in tune. Working on your ability to harmonize will serve you well when you play in a band. It’s your voice, use it!!
