Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. System Package

One of the most essential collections of equipment you’ll need for your live band is a good P.A. System. There are a lot of different P.A. System configurations and you can spend a lot of money building a P.A. from the ground up. Today I’m going to talk about what you need to build a basic P.A. system that will get you out in front of people playing gigs.    

   There are 4 main components you need when building a P.A. System. Here’s the list:

1. A mixer or soundboard
2. An amplifier
3. Speakers
4. Cables

With these four main items you’ll be able to assemble your basic P.A. System.

   Right here on Live Musician Central we’ve discussed some great mixers such as the Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-Pro as well as some fantastic club speakers such as the JBL JRX125 speakers. These are both great components and I use them in my live band with great success. All you need to complete your setup is a good power amp such as the QSC RMX 1450 Power Amp which is well matched to the JBL JRX125 speakers.

   The best way to buy cables is to keep an eye on reliable websites like Musician’s Friend and watch for accessories sales and discounts. Shure SE115 Sound Isolating Earphones

   I like to protect my ears from excessive noise when I’m listening to my personal music for pleasure. Having an excellent pair of sound isolating earphones is essential to protecting my hearing which I’m sorry to say isn’t so good after all my years playing in a live band. Still, I’m extremely picky about how my music sounds and I like to hear it warm and clear when I’m listening for pleasure. Sound isolating earphones are important for me because I can keep the volume at a reasonable level and still hear every detail of the music.

   I own a high end pair of Shure SE530 sound isolating earphones that I use for personal monitors with my live band. I also use them when I travel or simply want to listen to music when my Sennheiser headphones aren’t around. The thing is, they’re so expensive that I’m extremely careful with them and I don’t like to go running, biking or hiking with them. I love to be active and I’m a very serious runner so I wanted a really good pair of headphones that had high end sound but that didn’t cost $300.  

   I tried a lot of sports earphones because I need and earphone that will stay put in my ear while I run. Most of them wiggle loose and fall out and I’m constantly having to push them back into my ear. I knew my Shure SE530’s stayed perfectly still in my ear so I decided to look at some of the lower end of the Shure SE product line. That’s when I came across the Shure SE115 sound isolating earphones.

   The ergonomic design is almost exactly the same as my high end SE530’s and the SE115’s have expanding foam tips that conform to the shape of your ear canal. The foam tips give you a virtual custom fit to your ear and you get almost perfect sound isolation with them. They come with several different types of tips so finding tips that feel good in your ears while giving you excellent sound isolation is very easy. When I have the SE115’s in my ears they don’t move at all when I run. I can lift weights, run or do the stairmill and the earphones do not budge!

   The only thing I don’t like about the ergonomics is the cable design. The earphones have a very short cable attached to them that plugs into a longer extension. This leaves you with a big plug that bounces on your chest while running. The cable is long which is nice for setting the iPod on a table and listening but it can be unweildly when your MP3 player is in an armband.

   As for the sound, they are better than any headphone that I tried in their price range. Do they sound as good as the SE530 earphones? No they do not but they sound about 60% as good and cost 1/3 the price so I think that’s an excellent deal! The difference between the SE115’s and the SE530 is in the speaker design. The SE530 earphones have a triple-speaker configuration with two woofers and tweeter in each earphone for excellent detail and bass. The SE115’s have a single speaker called a Dynamic MicroSpeaker II by Shure in each earphone.

   The sound of the SE115’s is warm with good deep bass. They don’t have a lot of air, or extreme high end detail. That’s fine for me because I listen to a lot of rock and pop when I’m running and I prefer the warm sound for guitars and heavy bass beats. The SE115’s really put the music up against your eardrum and it takes a few minutes to get used to the sound being right in your head like that. The lack of an airy high-end does make you aware that you’re wearing earphones for a few minutes after you turn them on.

   Bottom line is, I’m very satisfied with them 90% of the time. I do sometimes wish they had the airy quality that the SE530’s have but when I’m running and working out, I really don’t miss it at all. I absolutely love how well they stay in my ears when I’m working out and they sound many times better than any earphone in the $20-$100 range. I recommend the Shure SE115 sound isolating earphones for anyone that wants excellent sound while they’re active. They would make an perfect solution for any drummer looking for in-ear monitor earphones that will stay put while they’re drumming.

Tune Your Own Piano

   I’m a pianist as well as a guitarist and I have an old Kranich and Bach baby Grand Piano. I’ve had my piano tuned professionally only once since I’ve had it and naturally, over time it has gone out of tune. So I decided to tackle the job myself to see how well I could tune my own piano. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be and the results have been very good.   

   I was able to tune my piano with just a few simple tools. The basic tools are as follows: 

• Piano Tuning Hammer
• Felt Temperament Strip
• Rubber Mutes
• Flat Blade Screwdriver

You can purchase a basic piano tuning kit that includes the tuning hammer, felt temperament strip and an assortment of rubber mutes. 

   I also purchased a book to help get me started tuning my piano. The book I got is called Piano Tuning: A Simple and Accurate Method for Amateurs by J. Cree Fischer. This book gives you a very good overview of how your piano is constructed, how your piano works and how to tune your piano. The book is very easy to read and you don’t have to read the entire book cover to cover to be able to tune your piano. You can simply use the book as a reference and read the chapters that are relevant to what you need to do to tune your piano. 

   Finally you will need a tuning reference for setting the pitch. Simply by using a tuning fork you can use the guide in the book to tune your piano by ear. I have a very good ear but tuning a piano by ear can be a daunting task. It is a skill that can take years to perfect. That’s why I used my trusty Peterson Strobe Tuner instead of a tuning fork. 

   The tuner I have is the Peterson 490-ST AutoStrobe tuner which is extremely accurate. It is pre-programmed with several piano specific stretch tunings. These stretch tunings will help you set the temperament on your piano making the rest of the tuning process much, much easier. The Peterson AutoStrobe tuner is an essential tool for tuning your own piano. It’s fairly expensive but it will easily pay for itself in savings when you tune your own piano.

Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. System Package

   If you play in a smaller live band such as a 2 to 4 person group then I’m sure you understand the need for a smaller P.A. system. A lot of acoustic duos will go out and play with a small amp, a couple mics and a pair of small speakers. But with a larger 3 or 4 person group I’m sure you’ve learned that you need more than just a  little 4-channel powered mixer head and a couple of speakers.

   I’d like to talk about an excellent P.A. system for smaller groups of two to four people. The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V is a complete P.A. package that will have your smaller group completely covered for all your P.A. needs. At the heart of the system is an dual-channel, 500 Watt per channel, powered mixer that has 8 total microphone inputs. The really nice thing about the EMX512SC is the added bonus of four of the eight channels being able to function as either mono microphone inputs or stereo line inputs. This gives the amp/mixer a total of 12 input channels.    

   Four of the input channels are dedicated, phantom powered mic inputs while the other four can be used for either more microphones or as stereo instrument inputs. A great way to set this mixer up is to use 4 mic inputs for vocals and then stereo inputs for a guitar, keyboard, drumset and bass. This amp head really does have your whole band covered if you’re using an electronic drumset. It seems like it always has just enough inputs to get a small band hooked up.

   Another thing I really like about this powered mixer is the built-in compression control for the 4 primary microphone channels. Everyone knows that vocals can get out of control with wild dynamic swings and the built-in compression control will tame down peaks while giving you the ability to boost the vocal volume to the front of the mix. That’s really invaluable and it’s a nice addition to the built-in effects unit which includes reverb, echo, chorus, flanger, phaser and even distortion.

   This mixer is also loaded with two graphic Equalizers, one for each 500 Watt channel. The built-in FCL (Feedback Channel Locator) system will help you custom tailor your EQ settings to any room you play in. It gives you visual indicators for which frequencies are causing feedback so you can set your EQ’s to eliminate feedback problems.

   The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package comes with two Yamaha S115V club speaker that feature a 15″ woofer and 2″ tweeters. These are proven speakers in live situations and they give excellent frequency response. The speakers are perfectly matched with the powered mixer. I love the fact that you also get two SM12V 2-way floor monitor wedges with 12″ drivers and 2″ tweeters. Having excellent floor monitors like these will really help your band stay together and keep in tune. Also included are two speaker stands for the main P.A. speakers that will help you direct your sound for the best audio performance.

   The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package comes with four decent Audio-Technica M4000S handheld dynamic microphones. These are good, solid microphones that will certainly get the job done in most live situations. Please remember that there are no mic stands included in this package so you’ll want to pick up any mic stands you may need.

   To round everything out, you get all the cables you need to hook up the microphones, the main speakers and the P.A. speakers. That’s a lot of cable and it’s a great deal that they’re all included in this package.

   Yamaha is known for excellent quality musical products which are extremely reliable. The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package is one sweet system for your band and it should last for years. Everything you need for your band P.A. system is included and I highly recommend it.

Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO Mixer

   The most important component in your live band’s P.A. system is the mixing console. Without a mixer you’re not going to be able to mix your live sound properly when playing a gig. I’ve written a couple posts such as “You Need A P.A. System To Play A Gig“ detailing how important having a good P.A. system is to the success of your band.

   Today I’m going to talk about a budget mixer made by Behringer called the Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO. I know that many of you that have experience with Behringer equipment are rolling your eyes right now and I don’t blame you. Behringer has a reputation for cheap equipment that doesn’t always come with the best build quality. I know I’ve had my share of problems with Behringer equipment but at the same time I’ve been able to use Behringer products quite successfully in my studio and with my live band.   

   Let me start by making the disclaimer that you should buy from a source that will allow you to return defective Behringer equipment if you have problems. Musician’s Friend is very good with their return policies and I’m recommending that you buy this mixer from them if you decide you want the Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO.

   The UB2442FX-PRO is loaded with tons of features at an unbelievably low price. As of today you can buy one for under $300 from Musician’s Friend. For that price you get a 16-channel board with 4 sub-groups. The 16 channels are controlled by 12 faders with channels 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and 15/16 assigned in stereo configuration. The mixer also has 10 XLR microphone inputs and is equipped with phantom power. For a full listing of this mixers specifications go here: Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO Specifications.

   As you can see when looking over the specifications, this mixer is loaded with features. It’s really a lot of mixer for such a low price. The features built-in to the UB2442FX-PRO are unheard of in this low price range. It was designed by Behringer in Germany and German companies have a reputation for quality. I agree that this is a quality design. So why is this mixer so inexpensive? Where the cost cutting happens is in the manufacturing. The UB2442FX-PRO is manufactured in China and the construction looks very nice but it is not what I would call heavy duty construction. By manufacturing the mixer in China and, I assume, using cheaper components, Behringer is able to keep costs very low.

   I know a lot of musicians that have purchased this mixer and I’ve heard a lot of complaints about failing channels, dying faders and LED’s that stop working. Again, these are all signs of substandard construction. I’ve read reviews on the Internet from UB2442FX-PRO owners saying they never even moved the mixer off their studio desk, yet channels are failing. In my experience with the UB2442FX-PRO I have been using the mixer for a couple of years now and it is still functioning perfectly. I use it primarily in my practice studio but I have played several gigs with it as well. It has never failed me and the mixer is still working like it did when it was brand new.

   Here’s a partial list of things I love about the mixer:

• +48 V Phantom Power for powering condensor mics
• 4 sub groups with separate outputs
• XLR as well as 1/4″ outputs
• Channel inserts and direct outputs from each mono channel (great for studio multi-track hookups)
• Main mix inserts

There are a lot of other options that I find extremely useful on the UB2442FX-PRO and the mixer is very configurable.

   I have found one flaw in the mixer and I’ve noticed this on all Behringer mixers that I’ve used. The built-in effects unit is very noisy with White Noise and hiss. You can dial the effects down to where the noise is minimized but you can never get rid of it using the built-in effects unit. Luckily there are many Insert options on the individual channels as well as the main mix for adding your own outboard effect units.

   Here’s the bottom line, in my opinion this mixer is an excellent buy. Is it an excellent value? Well, value implies high quality at a low price. This mixer is really medium quality at an extremely low price. You really can’t go wrong paying less $300 for a mixer with this many features. Even if a couple channels die, the mixer will be usable in a crippled state. But, it’s also extremely frustrating when your equipment gives you problems. That’s why I say, make sure you can return it and be ready to accept what you’re left with when the warranty runs out.

   This mixer has been discontinued but I understand that there is still quite a supply of them. They are still available through Musician’s Friend and they are priced to sell. If you remember that Behringer is a budget equipment line, I think you just may be pleased with the Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO. Danelectro FAB Chorus - Excellent Sound, Incredible Price

   I’ve been playing guitar in a live band for a lot of years now and I’ve come to rely on some basic guitar effects to help shape my sound. One of the most important effects you can add to your guitar effects collection is the Chorus effect. If you don’t know how a chorus works its quite simple. Chorusing makes your guitar sound like multiple guitars being played, hence the name Chorus. It accomplishes this effect by putting a slight delay and modulating the original signal then mixing the modulated signal with the original.

   Today I’m going to talk about an incredibly affordable chorus pedal called the FAB Chorus by Danelectro. The FAB Chorus is a colored a metallic blue, has an on/off indicator light, an on/off button and 3 knobs that control Mix, Speed and Depth. The FAB Chorus is a mono chorus as opposed to more expensive stereo chorus effects. As you know, a stereo chorus effect will yield a wider and more ambient chorus effect split between two stereo channels. The FAB Chorus is made to be used with a mono guitar amplifier.    

   Stereo chorus units are excellent when employing stereo amplification but most guitar amps simply run a mono feed to the guitar speakers. A lot of stereo chorus units sound weak and thin when run through a mono amplifier. The FAB Chorus is built to have a thick, rich chorus sound when run in mono. It really is suited to being plugged right into the guitars signal chain which feeds the amplifiers input jack. The FAB Chorus sounds excellent when used with an amplifier like the Fender Frontman 212R which is a functional but somewhat boring amp on its own. If you plug a Danelectro FAB Chorus into the Fender Frontman 212R it really thickens up the sound and makes the amp sound a lot more full.

   The FAB Chorus really does create a thick and beautiful mono chorus sound. It’s very easy to dial up a broad range of different sounds using the 3 control knobs. You can go from a light, shimmering chorus to a wildly modulating outer-space type chorus effect and everything in between. It’s really shocking the difference it will make when you put this chorus effect in your signal chain. I justcan’t give the FAB Chours high enough praise for it’s versatility and overall excellent sounding chorus effect.

   The FAB Chorus feels weighty enough that it has a good quality feel to it. You can feel some plastic but the pedal is built with a metal bottom and a heavy rubber base. Still, I wouldn’t recommend stomping too hard on this chorus pedal or dumping a drink on it. If you take care of it, I imagine the pedal will last you for years to come.

   The FAB Chorus runs on one 9 Volt battery and it also has a jack for an AC adaptor. I have only used it with a battery and the FAB Chorus is silent in terms of signal noise. The only thing you hear is rich chorus when it’s turned on. I have heard from other people that using an AC Adaptor will introduce some hum to the signal. I didn’t test this but I figured I would note it here.

   Now here’s the kicker, this incredible sounding Chorus pedal only costs $14.99 from Musician’s Friend! That is an unbelievably low price for such an excellent sounding guitar effect. The Chorus effect is essential in creating thick, modern guitar tones and is one of the core effects every guitarist should have. You just can’t go wrong getting a great chorus like the Danelectro FAB Chorus at such a low price. Get one today!

B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker System

As you know, it’s crucial for your live band to have the right equipment in order to play a gig. The most important thing you need when playing a gig is a good P.A. System. You can buy yourself a complete P.A. package or you can assemble a P.A. by it’s individual components. The three main components in a P.A. system are a mixer, amplifier and speakers. Today I’m going to talk about a speaker system that has it’s own built-in power amp, the B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker Sound System.

There are a lot of advantages to buying the B-52 Matrix 2000 speaker sysem. One of the most overlooked pieces of equipment when assembling a P.A. system is the amplifier that powers the speakers. I’ve seen a lot of musicians who are just starting out purchase a very nice speaker package with a mixer and totally forget to buy a power amp for them. That’s why it’s so nice to have the amplifier that powers the speakers built right into the speaker system itself.  

Another thing I really like about the B-52 Matrix 2000 is the fact that it includes an 18″ subwoofer. Since bass frequencies are sent in mono, you really only need one subwoofer and having a big 18″ subwoofer really makes the low end thump. The subwoofer on the B-52 system also houses the power amp and crossover that feed the two satellite speakers. Needless to say, this makes the subwoofer very heavy. Luckily, casters are included and mounted to the subwoofer/amplifier making it easy to roll around. That makes moving the system a whole lot easier.

The satellite speakers are each loaded with a 12″ woofer and a constant directivity horn. They are well matched to the subwoofer with the crossover tuned primarily for live band music. I have seen DJ’s using this system as well and it sounds very good with full rich bass and good clear highs. The power total is 1200 watts with 6oo watts powering the subwoofer and 300 watts powering each individual speaker. That’s a lot of power and is more than enough to fill small to medium sized venues.

The system comes with zippered covers for each piece of the system which is nice for hauling and keeping the dust off everything while you are storing it. The casters make hauling the entire system easy as you can stack the satellite speakers face-down on the subwoofer and roll the whole thing wherever you need to go at the gig.

This is a very nice, complete speaker package that will have your band sounding it’s best. You’ll really appreciate all the nice low-end that the subwoofer puts out and the fact that you don’t have to haul around a separate amplifier rack to power everything. B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker Sound SystemThe B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker Sound System consists of 2 – 12″ 2-way speakers, an 18″ subwoofer with a 3-channel amplifier, and circuitry housed in a separate compartment on the sub unit’s back. A 600W amp drives the subs, and 2 – 300W amps drive the 2-ways. All of the components are matched for the best possible sound and balance with minimal tweaking. All you have to do is connect the B-52 Matrix 2000 system components, plug in the power cord, plug in your mixer or other sound source, and you’re ready to go!The B-52 subwoofer enclosure is divided into 2 separate compartments. The front chamber serves as the cabinet for the cast-frame, 4″ voice coil and 18″ subwoofer. The rear chamber houses all of the system’s electronic circuitry, which includes the amplification for all 3 components, power supply, compressor, and preamps. The B-52 subwoofer has a power handling capability of 600W and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms.Each 12″ 2-way Matrix 2000 speaker is loaded with a B-52 custom-designed 12″ woofer and a 1″ titanium diaphragm compression driver, mounted to a 90° x 40° constant directivity horn. The speakers can be pole mounted, used as stage monitors, or flown with built-in 3/8″—16 TPI hardware for permanent installations. For transport, they mount onto the subwoofer’s front grille. Transporting the B-52 Matrix system is easy: Move the subwoofer onto its casters and place the included cover over the subwoofer. Next, pull the included covers over the satellite speakers and close the zippers. It is recommended that you transport the subwoofer and satellites separately. You may transport all the components at the same time by placing the satellite speakers onto the subwoofer’s front panel facing down. Secure the satellite speakers to the subwoofer with the included locking strap by fastening it to the bar handles on the side of the subwoofer cabinet.The B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker Sound System has a limited lifetime warranty on cabs and compression drivers; 5-year warranty on speakers; 2-year warranty on amplifiers.

Dean Markley Blue Steel Bass Strings

   Over the years I’ve played several different instruments in various live bands. In fact, the first bar band I played in, I was playing the bass guitar. I really love to play the bass guitar and it’s one instrument that truly came naturally to me. Today I’m going to tell you about the strings I use on my bass guitar. 

   If you’ve read my post about Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings for electric guitar then I’m sure you won’t be surprised at all when I tell you that I prefer Dean Markley Blue Steel Strings for my bass guitar as well. In case you didn’t know, Dean Markley Blue Steel strings are cryogenically treated by dipping them in -320 degree liquid nitrogen. They are then packaged and sealed in their box ready for you to purchase.   

   I honestly don’t know what the cryogenic treatment does to the strings other than make them really, really cold. I know Dean Markley has had some scientific mumbo-jumbo about what the process does to the strings but I really only care about a couple things when it comes to my bass strings, tone and durability. 

   The first and most important thing I really love about the Dean Markley Blue Steel bass strings is the tone. These bass strings sound deep and punchy but with a bright ring to them. It’s really difficult to find a string with these three qualities. You can get deep and punchy or punchy and bright but getting all three at the same time is difficult. Somehow the Blue Steel strings have that elusive tone making them great for everything from driving rock-n-roll to funk to jazz. Maybe the cryogenic process is the reason these strings sound this way, I don’t know but they sound great! 

   The second thing I love about the Dean Markley Blue Steel strings is their durability. Many bass strings can go years without breaking but they lose their tone quickly, become dull and muffled and sound bad for most of their life. The Dean Markley Blue Steel bass strings start out extremely bright sounding and then their tone darkens up a bit as they age. It takes a very long time for them to lose their deep/punchy/bright sound and that’s what makes them so great. 

   If you want a bright, twangy bass string the Dean Markley Blue Steel strings will have that sound when they are brand new. You will have to change them more often to keep that searing brightness but that’s pretty much how all bass strings are. As I said before, their true strength is in their ability to keep a well-rounded deep/punchy/bright tone. 

   I highly recommend that you pick up a set of Dean Markley Blue Steel Bass Guitar strings and give them a good try. I doubt you’ll be disappointed and they’ll most likely become your string of choice!
