Behringer EP4000 Stereo Power Amplifier

   Everyone that plays in a live band knows that you need a good mixer at the heart of your P.A. system. Many musicians who are building their first PA system spend a lot of time researching and choosing a mixer and completely forget that they will need a good power amplifier to power that mixer. Today I’m going to talk about an excellent, affordable power amplifier that will work with any mixer. I’d like to introduce you to the Behringer Europower EP4000 stereo power amplifier.  

   The Behringer EP4000 stereo amplifier delivers 2000 Watts per channel into a 2-Ohm load when used in stereo mode or 4000 Watts into a 4-ohm load when running in bridged-mono mode. You’ll want to note your speaker load when pairing your speakers with a power amplifier. Most speakers are rated at either a 4-ohm or 8-ohm nominal impedance. This is important because every time you double the ohm load on your speakers the power from your power amp drops. For instance, the Behringer EP4000 hooked up to a 4-ohm stereo load produces 1400 Watts per channel and when it’s hooked up to an 8-ohm load the power drops to 750 Watts per channel. That’s why it’s so important to match your amplifiers power output ratings with the nominal impedance of your speakers.

 I use the Behringer EP4000 to amplify my Behringer Xenyx X2442USB mixer and my JBL JRX125 speakers and it’s an excellent combination. The JBL JRX125 speakers run at a 4-ohm nominal impedance and the 1400 Watts per channel from the Behringer Power Amplifier really crank out the volume. The Behringer EP4000 amplifier has both Speakon and Terminal output connections and connecting my JBL speakers is quick and easy with the Speakon cables. I connect my Behringer Xynyx x2442USB mixer to the EP4000 amplifier inputs with XLR cables. The EP4000 amplifier will also accept 1/4″ TRS balanced connectors or 1/4″ unbalanced connectors as well. The amp has every available connector type for hooking the amp up except for 1/4″ output jacks.

   Another feature I really love about this amp are the mode switches on the back of the amplifier. These switches allow you to easily turn on or off some of the amplifiers features. You can turn on or off the clip limiter or the low cut filter as well as selecting your low cut filter to cutoff at either 50Hz or 30Hz. You can also use the switches to select either Stereo Mode or Bridge Mode.

   The front panel of the amplifier is simple and clean looking. There’s a power switch, two gain knobs, clip LED, signal LED and a power LED. The amplifier also features fan forced air cooling with a variable speed fan that changes speeds with the amplifiers cooling requirements. The EP4000 weighs in at 37 pounds so it’s not a lightweight amplifier but it’s not outrageously heavy either.

   The Behringer Europower EP4000 Stereo Power Amplifier is a very good amplifier and worth more than you’ll pay for it. I am always cautious when recommending Behringer equipment because of their notorious build quality. I have spoken to several people who own this amplifier and have not heard of any reliability issues which is rare for a Behringer product. These amplifiers seem to be extremely reliable and I haven’t had any trouble with mine.

   As for sound quality, I think the amplifier sounds excellent and I’ve been very happy with how it sounds pushing my JBL JRX125 speakers. Amplify Your Mixer With The Behringer Europower EP4000 Stereo Power Amplifier

   If you’re looking for an extremely versatile mixer and you have a limited budget then look no further than the Behringer Xenyx X2442USB Mixing Console. This mixer is ideal for use with your live band or even in your home studio. If you have a band with four or five members then this is the ideal mixing solution for you simply because of the excellent selection of input and routing options.

   The Xenyx X2442USB is the upgrade to the Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX Pro mixer. The mixers are very similar in capability and channel availability and I suggest you read the Behringer Euorack UB2442FX Pro Review to get more of an idea of these mixer’s capabilities. The Xenyx X2442USB has two very important upgrades. First, it has built in compression! This is a major advantage for mixing live vocals as well as live drums. It saves you from having to hook up an outboard compression unit to the mixer. The downside is, it’s only available on channel’s 1-8. Still, that’s generally enough channels for your vocal mics and basic drum mics.    

   The second very important upgrade found on the Xenyx X2442USB is the USB capability of the mixer. You can now hook the X2442USB directly to your computer and have the main mix routed to the computer through the USB. You can also choose to route a two-channel mix from your computer to the X2442USB. This gives you some nice capabilities such as the ability to record your live show directly to a laptop or computer through the USB connection. It also gives you the option to patch in loops or sequences from a computer to the X2442USB and amplify them through the main P.A. system.

   The downside of the USB connectivity is the fact that it’s only a 2-channel send/receive. Upside of course is it’s bi-directional capability. The mixer also ships with some free software to use with your computer and the mixer’s USB abilities. You’ll get Audacity, Podifier, Juice, Podnova and Golden Ear software to use with your mixer. You’ll also get more than 100 virtual instruments and 50 Effect plugins for the software.

   The Xenyx X2442USB is called a 16-channel mixer and sure enough, it has 16 channels worth of inputs. But that being said, not all inputs are created equal. The Xenyx X2442USB has a total of 16 inputs on the channel input section. This doesn’t  mean you have 16 independent mixable channels. The way the inputs are split up are as follows: Channels 1 through 8 contain 8 mono input channels complete with their own separate mic preamp and compression control. Each of these 8 channels is routed through it’s own EQ section, Auxiliary bus, Effects bus, Panning knob and then a master volume fader. On channels 9 through 16 you have four stereo input channels with channels being grouped in stereo sets. For example, channel 9/10 is grouped together with it’s own unbalanced 1/4″ Left and Right input. Inputs 9/10 are then routed together through an EQ section, Auxiliary bus, effects section, L/R Balance section and then through a stereo volume fader which controls both channels simultaneously.  Any of these channels can be used as a mono channel or a stereo channel. Channel’s 9/10 and 11/12 each have their own mic pre-amp as well if you would like to use these channels for microphone inputs. These channels DO NOT have their own compression setting. Channels 13/14 and 15/16 are also grouped together in stereo configuration.

   As you can see, the Xenyx X2442USB does not have 16 identical input channels. The mixer still has plenty of versatility and is just big enough to mix a 4 or 5 person group. Here’s an example of how you can hook up a 4 person group with a guitarist, keyboard player, bass player and drummer in which everyone sings. Channels 1-4 will contain everybody’s vocal microphones. Channel 4-7 will contain bass drum, snare drum, drumset left and drumset right microphones. Channel 8 and 9/10 will contain the left and right stereo guitar microphone inputs. Channel 11/12 will contain the bass guitar input. Channel 13/14 will be the stereo keyboard input. With this setup the singer and drum mics will all be connected to channels with built-in compression for better dynamic control. As you can see, the mixer has more than enough inputs when mixing this type of group. If you use an electronic drum set you will only need a stereo input for the drums which will then free up two more channels for you to hook up whatever you want.

   Another strong feature found on the Xenyx X2442USB is the built in 24-bit dual engine FX processor. This gives you all the standard studio effects for use in either recording or your live mixing. You’ll get all the standard effects such as reverb, delay and chorus. You’ll also get some lesser known effects such as a pitch shifter and detuning. There are some nice combination effects such as Delay + Reverb and Chorus + Reverb. The effects are decent although you’ll want to use good plugins if you’re using the mixer for recording. The built-in effects work plenty well for most live situations.

   The Behringer Xenyx X2442USB has a lot of input/output options as well as sub-mixing capabilities. There is a built-in Phantom power supply so you can use your good condenser mics as well.    As with all Behringer equipment I remind you that it is a budget line. I have heard complaints of channels failing on Behringer mixers. I have had a channel fail on my Behringer mixer but was able to fix it by opening the mixer and soldering the input circuit board. If you can purchase this mixer with an extended warranty then I recommend that you do that. I have found that if the channels are going to fail they do fail within the first year. After that they seem to last forever.

   The Behringer Xenyx X2442USB is a fine mixer with excellent mixing capabilities. When you look at how affordable the mixer is it’s really hard not to recommend buying this mixer. I feel like it’s an unbelievable bargain for a mixer with this much capability.

One of the most essential collections of equipment you’ll need for your live band is a good P.A. System. There are a lot of different P.A. System configurations and you can spend a lot of money building a P.A. from the ground up. Today I’m going to talk about what you need to build a basic P.A. system that will get you out in front of people playing gigs.    

   There are 4 main components you need when building a P.A. System. Here’s the list:

1. A mixer or soundboard
2. An amplifier
3. Speakers
4. Cables

With these four main items you’ll be able to assemble your basic P.A. System.

   Right here on Live Musician Central we’ve discussed some great mixers such as the Behringer Xenyx X2442USB as well as some fantastic club speakers such as the JBL JRX125 speakers. These are both great components and I use them in my live band with great success. All you need to complete your setup is a good power amp such as the QSC RMX 1450 Power Amp which is well matched to the JBL JRX125 speakers.

How To Build Your P.A. System

   If you play in a smaller live band such as a 2 to 4 person group then I’m sure you understand the need for a smaller P.A. system. A lot of acoustic duos will go out and play with a small amp, a couple mics and a pair of small speakers. But with a larger 3 or 4 person group I’m sure you’ve learned that you need more than just a  little 4-channel powered mixer head and a couple of speakers.

   I’d like to talk about an excellent P.A. system for smaller groups of two to four people. The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V is a complete P.A. package that will have your smaller group completely covered for all your P.A. needs. At the heart of the system is an dual-channel, 500 Watt per channel, powered mixer that has 8 total microphone inputs. The really nice thing about the EMX512SC is the added bonus of four of the eight channels being able to function as either mono microphone inputs or stereo line inputs. This gives the amp/mixer a total of 12 input channels.    

   Four of the input channels are dedicated, phantom powered mic inputs while the other four can be used for either more microphones or as stereo instrument inputs. A great way to set this mixer up is to use 4 mic inputs for vocals and then stereo inputs for a guitar, keyboard, drumset and bass. This amp head really does have your whole band covered if you’re using an electronic drumset. It seems like it always has just enough inputs to get a small band hooked up.

   Another thing I really like about this powered mixer is the built-in compression control for the 4 primary microphone channels. Everyone knows that vocals can get out of control with wild dynamic swings and the built-in compression control will tame down peaks while giving you the ability to boost the vocal volume to the front of the mix. That’s really invaluable and it’s a nice addition to the built-in effects unit which includes reverb, echo, chorus, flanger, phaser and even distortion.

   This mixer is also loaded with two graphic Equalizers, one for each 500 Watt channel. The built-in FCL (Feedback Channel Locator) system will help you custom tailor your EQ settings to any room you play in. It gives you visual indicators for which frequencies are causing feedback so you can set your EQ’s to eliminate feedback problems.

   The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package comes with two Yamaha S115V club speaker that feature a 15″ woofer and 2″ tweeters. These are proven speakers in live situations and they give excellent frequency response. The speakers are perfectly matched with the powered mixer. I love the fact that you also get two SM12V 2-way floor monitor wedges with 12″ drivers and 2″ tweeters. Having excellent floor monitors like these will really help your band stay together and keep in tune. Also included are two speaker stands for the main P.A. speakers that will help you direct your sound for the best audio performance.

   The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package comes with four decent Audio-Technica M4000S handheld dynamic microphones. These are good, solid microphones that will certainly get the job done in most live situations. Please remember that there are no mic stands included in this package so you’ll want to pick up any mic stands you may need.

   To round everything out, you get all the cables you need to hook up the microphones, the main speakers and the P.A. speakers. That’s a lot of cable and it’s a great deal that they’re all included in this package.

   Yamaha is known for excellent quality musical products which are extremely reliable. The Yamaha EMX512SC/S115V P.A. package is one sweet system for your band and it should last for years. Everything you need for your band P.A. system is included and I highly recommend it.

Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO Mixer

   The most important component in your live band’s P.A. system is the mixing console. Without a mixer you’re not going to be able to mix your live sound properly when playing a gig. I’ve written a couple posts such as “You Need A P.A. System To Play A Gig“ detailing how important having a good P.A. system is to the success of your band.

   Today I’m going to talk about a budget mixer made by Behringer called the Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO. I know that many of you that have experience with Behringer equipment are rolling your eyes right now and I don’t blame you. Behringer has a reputation for cheap equipment that doesn’t always come with the best build quality. I know I’ve had my share of problems with Behringer equipment but at the same time I’ve been able to use Behringer products quite successfully in my studio and with my live band.   

   Let me start by making the disclaimer that you should buy from a source that will allow you to return defective Behringer equipment if you have problems. Musician’s Friend is very good with their return policies and I’m recommending that you buy this mixer from them if you decide you want the Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO.

   The UB2442FX-PRO is loaded with tons of features at an unbelievably low price. As of today you can buy one for under $300 from Musician’s Friend. For that price you get a 16-channel board with 4 sub-groups. The 16 channels are controlled by 12 faders with channels 9/10, 11/12, 13/14 and 15/16 assigned in stereo configuration.    As you can see when looking over the specifications, this mixer is loaded with features. It’s really a lot of mixer for such a low price. The features built-in to the UB2442FX-PRO are unheard of in this low price range. It was designed by Behringer in Germany and German companies have a reputation for quality. I agree that this is a quality design. So why is this mixer so inexpensive? Where the cost cutting happens is in the manufacturing. The UB2442FX-PRO is manufactured in China and the construction looks very nice but it is not what I would call heavy duty construction. By manufacturing the mixer in China and, I assume, using cheaper components, Behringer is able to keep costs very low.

   I know a lot of musicians that have purchased this mixer and I’ve heard a lot of complaints about failing channels, dying faders and LED’s that stop working. Again, these are all signs of substandard construction. I’ve read reviews on the Internet from UB2442FX-PRO owners saying they never even moved the mixer off their studio desk, yet channels are failing. In my experience with the UB2442FX-PRO I have been using the mixer for a couple of years now and it is still functioning perfectly. I use it primarily in my practice studio but I have played several gigs with it as well. It has never failed me and the mixer is still working like it did when it was brand new.

   Here’s a partial list of things I love about the mixer:

• +48 V Phantom Power for powering condensor mics
• 4 sub groups with separate outputs
• XLR as well as 1/4″ outputs
• Channel inserts and direct outputs from each mono channel (great for studio multi-track hookups)
• Main mix inserts

There are a lot of other options that I find extremely useful on the UB2442FX-PRO and the mixer is very configurable.

   I have found one flaw in the mixer and I’ve noticed this on all Behringer mixers that I’ve used. The built-in effects unit is very noisy with White Noise and hiss. You can dial the effects down to where the noise is minimized but you can never get rid of it using the built-in effects unit. Luckily there are many Insert options on the individual channels as well as the main mix for adding your own outboard effect units.

   Here’s the bottom line, in my opinion this mixer is an excellent buy. Is it an excellent value? Well, value implies high quality at a low price. This mixer is really medium quality at an extremely low price. You really can’t go wrong paying less $300 for a mixer with this many features. Even if a couple channels die, the mixer will be usable in a crippled state. But, it’s also extremely frustrating when your equipment gives you problems. That’s why I say, make sure you can return it and be ready to accept what you’re left with when the warranty runs out.

   This mixer has been discontinued but I understand that there is still quite a supply of them. The updated version called the XENYX X2442USB is available at Musician’s Friend and they are priced to sell. If you remember that Behringer is a budget equipment line, I think you just may be pleased with the Behringer Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO. B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker System

As you know, it’s crucial for your live band to have the right equipment in order to play a gig. The most important thing you need when playing a gig is a good P.A. System. You can buy yourself a complete P.A. package or you can assemble a P.A. by it’s individual components. The three main components in a P.A. system are a mixer, amplifier and speakers. Today I’m going to talk about a speaker system that has it’s own built-in power amp, the B-52 Matrix 2000 Speaker Sound System.

There are a lot of advantages to buying the B-52 Matrix 2000 speaker sysem. One of the most overlooked pieces of equipment when assembling a P.A. system is the amplifier that powers the speakers. I’ve seen a lot of musicians who are just starting out purchase a very nice speaker package with a mixer and totally forget to buy a power amp for them. That’s why it’s so nice to have the amplifier that powers the speakers built right into the speaker system itself.  

Another thing I really like about the B-52 Matrix 2000 is the fact that it includes an 18″ subwoofer. Since bass frequencies are sent in mono, you really only need one subwoofer and having a big 18″ subwoofer really makes the low end thump. The subwoofer on the B-52 system also houses the power amp and crossover that feed the two satellite speakers. Needless to say, this makes the subwoofer very heavy. Luckily, casters are included and mounted to the subwoofer/amplifier making it easy to roll around. That makes moving the system a whole lot easier.

The satellite speakers are each loaded with a 12″ woofer and a constant directivity horn. They are well matched to the subwoofer with the crossover tuned primarily for live band music. I have seen DJ’s using this system as well and it sounds very good with full rich bass and good clear highs. The power total is 1200 watts with 6oo watts powering the subwoofer and 300 watts powering each individual speaker. That’s a lot of power and is more than enough to fill small to medium sized venues.

The system comes with zippered covers for each piece of the system which is nice for hauling and keeping the dust off everything while you are storing it. The casters make hauling the entire system easy as you can stack the satellite speakers face-down on the subwoofer and roll the whole thing wherever you need to go at the gig.

This is a very nice, complete speaker package that will have your band sounding it’s best. You’ll really appreciate all the nice low-end that the subwoofer puts out and the fact that you don’t have to haul around a separate amplifier rack to power everything. Live Musician Gift Idea – Live Sound Accessories Pack

  I’ve written many times on Live Musician Central about how important it is for every band member in a live band to do some singing. A Suggestion On Gifts For Musicians

One of the biggest things I dread about playing in a live band is hauling equipment in and out of the gig venue. I have hauled more equipment up stairs and ramps than I care to remember. I always hoped I would get rich enough one day to afford my own roadies to haul my equipment. That’s only happened a couple of times so it’s usually me that has to carry my gear in.

Make Equipment Hauling A Breeze With A Mini Cart

Rane AC 22S Crossover - The Key To Your Bi-Amp System

   There are a lot of different ways to run a P.A. System in your live band. Depending on the size of your gigs, your P.A. requirements can be very different. If you’re just playing a small room such as a coffee house for 20-30 people then using powered speakers may be the way to go. If you’re playing medium sized to large clubs, it may be time to step up to a bi-amped P.A. System.

   So what is bi-amping? Put simply, it’s using two separate amplifiers on your P.A. System with one of the amps powering the low  frequencies and the other amp powering the mid/high frequencies.    

   There are two big advantages to using a bi-amp system on your P.A.. The first is simply the increased audio quality you will achieve with a bi-amp system. You get better audio quality by spreading the sound out among more speakers along with  the fact that you will have more overall power pushing your P.A. system. The second advantage is the fact that you will be able to actually run your P.A. at lower volume levels while still being able to maintain a good solid amount of low-end fullness and thump.

   In a bi-amped speaker system you need to use an active crossover to split the full range audio signal from your board into the separate frequency ranges that your multiple amps will power. The most common frequency ranges to split for a bi-amp system are 250-350Hz and below to the Subwoofers and 250-350Hz and higher to the mid/high speakers.

   The reason for splitting frequencies at 250-350Hz is because of the fact that at 350Hz, the amount of power required to drive the mid/high speakers is equal to the amount of power required to drive the subs. I personally prefer to run 250Hz and lower to the subs since my mid/high speakers sound better than the subs reproducing the frequencies in the 250-350Hz range.

   Once you have your frequency ranges split by the crossover you simply run the outputs of your crossover the the inputs of your amplifiers. One amp will connect to your subwoofers and one amp will connect to your mid/high speakers.

   From there you can adjust the volume level of the separate amplifiers to fine-tune the audio until it sounds the very best. You now have the ability to get good, solid low end while maintaining clean mids and crystal clear high sounds. You can get even more control and better sound by running a tri-amp system but it’s hard to justify the gains with the associated cost in a tri-amp system. It’s my personal recommendation that you Bi-Amp your P.A. system whenever possible as it will give you much better live sound.

To further enhance transparency, it features adjustable time delay circuits on the low (and mid when used as a 3-way) outputs to compensate for any physical misalignment of the drivers. A mono subwoofer switch provides the option to sum both low outputs in stereo 2-way mode. The Rane AC 22S utilizes XLR connectors with active balanced inputs and outputs.
