Stage Banter, Speak To The Crowd!

This is just a quick tip on Stage Banter. When you’re up there onstage and you’re not playing, don’t forget to talk to the crowd! You’ll lose them quick if you’re up onstage having a discussion amongst yourselves. The crowd will see you as either confused or simply uncaring that there’s a crowd of people there to watch you.
If you’re not sure what song you’re going to play next make sure you have somebody on the microphone talking to the crowd while the rest of the band decides what song is going to be played next. That’s why you want to make a set list at the beginning of the set so you don’t have to fill too much airtime with stage banter.
Stage banter is a great thing because it really connects you with the crowd. A crowd that feels connected to the band is going to remember the band and they’re going to keep coming back to see you. So here are some suggestions about what to talk about onstage while you’re filling time between songs or during technical problems.

  • Thank the bartenders and waitresses and tell the audience to tip them well.
  • Talk about interesting looking people in the room.
  • Introduce some members of the band.
  • Point out the tip jar at the front of the stage and ask people to fill it.
  • Tell people where you’re playing next.
  • Announce upcoming events at the club that you’re in.
  • Announce the names of the next few songs your going to play.
  • Promote the name of the website.
  • Talk about your band name.
  • Talk about your CD and give away a couple free copies.
  • Give free promo away to the best dancers or people that can answer a trivia question.
  • Ask people to yell for either a fast song or a slow song.
  • Tell a funny story that happened to the band (make it short though).
  • Ask the crowd how they’re doing.

Those are just a few things you can talk about when you’re trying to fill time onstage. There are a lot more so feel free to leave comments on this Blog if you have any other great ideas.
