The Best Vocal Mic (for the money) Shure Beta 58A

The Shure Beta 58A is the perfect combination of quality, value and performance in a vocal microphone.

I’m the lead guitarist in my band. I also sing. I sing lead on a lot of the songs and I sing backup on most of the rest. It doesn’t matter what instrument you play, being able to sing is going to increase your value exponentially.

When I got into this business, I didn’t have a lot of money and bought the cheapest stuff I could find. My cheap equipment really held me back and kept me from a lot of early success. A great way to ruin a live gig is to fight microphone feedback the whole show. People won’t put up with it for very long.

I’ve also seen a lot of guitarists spend hours and a lot of money picking the perfect guitar. Then they spend the least amount of money on the worst mics money can buy. It ends up hurting the show and you lose gigs, fans and money.

I’m going to suggest a vocal microphone for you today. The mic is the Shure Beta 58A Microphone. I’ve chosen this microphone as my main microphone for singing for a number of reasons:

  1. It sounds fabulous!
  2. It is extremely feedback resistant.
  3. It has a hot cartridge in it with lots of output to the mixer so I’ve never had a problem with running out of fader or volume headroom on this mic.
  4. It really preserves the sound of your voice without introducing a lot of strange frequencies.
  5. It’s tough as nails and can take a beating.
  6. It’s relatively cheap, especially when you consider its many advantages.

The Shure Beta 58A Microphone has made me nothing but happy since I’ve been using it. Before the Shure Beta 58A Microphone I was using the Shure SM58 Microphone which is a good, but not great mic. It was never loud enough and it really made my voice sound too full of bass. The Shure Beta 58A Microphone really blows it away and easily justifies the exta $50 you’ll pay for it.
I’m giving the Shure Beta 58A Microphone my very highest recommendation on the point that you get Shure quality at a killer price point. Nothing in this price range even comes close. Make sure you buy new and not used since you won’t pay much more for a brand new one and you’ll get the full Shure warranty.
