I’ve always had good experiences ordering from Music123. Here’s an experience I had recently when I ordered a product. I had ordered several different types of guitar picks to experiment with including the Jellifish Chorus Guitar Pick. Somehow, the Jellifish got crushed during shipping and all the wires on it got bent. I called Music123 and they sent me out a brand new one, completely free without making me return the damaged one. Now that’s customer service! So make sure you check out the great sale and excellent products at Music123.

Now is the perfect time to get your big ticket items for Christmas. These top items sell out regularly and can be hard to get closer the Christmas. I recommend these top selling products from Music123: Read more »

How To Get Your Band In Tune

Posted in Bass Guitar Gear, Guitar Gear, Keyboard Gear, Live Sound, Live Sound Gear, Recording Gear on October 3rd, 2008 by Matt Rushton
Peterson Stroboflip VS-F
I’m going to talk about a common problem that I hear quite often when I’m out listening to bands. It’s a problem I’ve encountered working with various musicians in my studio as well. The problem that I’m talking about is the use of several different electronic tuners while tuning the various instruments in a band. You would think that a tuner is a tuner and that they’re all properly calibrated but the truth is that any individual tuner can be slightly out of calibration. If you have two different tuners and they’re both a little bit out of calibration, let’s say one is slightly sharp and the other is slightly flat, you’ll hear a big difference in tuning between the different instruments that have been tuned on them. The audience will simply hear an out of tune band which isn’t good for any performance by a live musician.

The Hohner Blues Harp

Posted in Keyboard Gear, Vocal Gear on August 21st, 2008 by Matt Rushton
Hohner Blues Harp
Mathias Hohner started making harmonicas in his kitchen in Trossingen, Germany. Amazingly, Hohner harmonicas are still made at a factory in Trossingen, Germany after all these years. I don’t think there’s any question that the Hohner Harmonica has had a profound influence on American music. The harmonica is one of the easiest and most fun instruments I have ever learned how to play.

Line 6 TonePort KB37 Audio Interface and MIDI Controller

Posted in 2. Equipment, Keyboard Gear, Recording, Recording Gear on July 2nd, 2008 by Matt Rushton
Line 6 TonePort KB37
One of the finest pieces of equipment I have ever owned is the
Line 6 TonePort KB37 Audio Interface and MIDI Controller.

This little device has the power to be your sole interface into your digital audio software workstation. I use this controller with my laptop and Sony Acid Pro 6. They work perfectly together with the KB37 providing MIDI keyboard control as well as 2 mic inputs with built in 48v phantom power, a guitar/bass input and stereo line inputs. It also has an S/PDIF out, TRS line outputs, TRS monitor input and an independent headphone jack. With that many inputs and outputs it’s your total solution to your audio interface needs when multi-tracking your projects on your computer.

Tascam MP-GT1 Portable MP3 Guitar Trainer
When I was first learning how to play songs by ear from the original recordings it was a huge struggle for me. I was trained to read music from a young age and playing by ear was a whole new world for me. I remember sitting on my bed and working on a song for several hours before I finally had it down. The hardest thing of all was learining how to play the guitar solos. The notes flew by so fast that I couldn’t begin to pick them out.

Sony Acid Pro 6 Professional Music Workstation

Posted in 2. Equipment, Keyboard Gear, Recording Gear on May 9th, 2008 by Matt Rushton

I have a fully equipped studio in my house and at the heart of the studio is my Digidesign Digi 002 Rack Music Production System. This Digidesign interface will work with several different software music workstations. The Digidesign Digi 002 Rack Music Production System runs with an included copy of Pro-Tools LE. The really great thing is that there are several other software suites that run seamlessly with the Digidesign Digi 002 Rack interface using the Digidesign drivers. So if you can find a Digi 002 Rack on eBay you can use it with software suites other than Pro-Tools.
Today I’m going to review and discuss a sotware that I’m very fond of, Sony Acid Pro 6. Read more »

Practicing to a beat…not a metronome.

Posted in 3. Improve Your Band Skills, Bass Guitar Gear, Guitar Gear, Keyboard Gear, Musicianship on April 24th, 2008 by Matt Rushton

One thing that most musicians struggle with is playing accurately in a groove. It’s a huge necessity to be able to play things on the beat especially when you’re playing with other musicians. That rhythmic pulse is what keeps us all on the same page when we’re playing together in groups. I’ve played with bass players and guitar players that have a tough time even playing an eighth-note rhythm consistently. I myself struggle to play extremely fast guitar solos on the beat from time to time and it used to be a real struggle for me until I started practicing with a metronome. The metronome did me well but boy is it boring and irritating after a while.      Read more »
