  • Sunday Funnies – Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer

Yes it’s Christmas time once again and that means it’s time for some good Christmas humor for the Live Musician Central Sunday Funnies. Here’s a song that’s been covered by more than a few live bands in it’s time. It’s been a few years since Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer was released and it’s become a real Christmas classic. I remember when it was released in 1983 and laughing good and hard at the accompanying music video. My Mom, who was a Grandma too, didn’t find the song quite as funny as we kids did for some reason.

I hope you get a good chuckle out of the video for Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. If you haven’t seen it for a while I’m sure you’ll see a few things that will get you laughing yet again.     (more…)

  • A Bridge Pin Puller Is A Perfect Acoustic Guitar Gift Accessory

Dunlop Bridge Pin Puller - Bottle Opener
Dunlop Bridge Pin Puller - Bottle Opener

I’m sure a lot of you are asking for or giving an acoustic guitar as a gift for Christmas this year. I still remember when I was 13 years old and I got my very first acoustic guitar. I loved it and it brought a whole new dimension in music to my life. Getting my acoustic guitar as a Christmas present was literally what launched my career as a musician playing in live bands.

I remember learning how to play on that acoustic guitar and playing it until I broke a string. That brought me to my first string change on an acoustic guitar. Let me tell you, it was a learning experience and I learned a hard lesson. Acoustic guitar bridge pins are a real pain in ass to get out of the bridge! Naturally I grabbed a flat blade screwdriver and began prying against my beautiful wood bridge mount which I immediately chipped by prying on it.   (more…)

  • Playing Christmas Songs In Your Live Band

    Elvis Rockin' Christmas
    Elvis Rockin' Christmas

The season is upon us and it’s time to play those holiday gigs that come to all working live bands. I don’t know if your band is like mine, but it seems like every year we talk about learning a Christmas song or two and we just never seem to get around to it. So the holidays come and we just play the same old stuff at our shows. That’s why I’m going to give you some tips on preparing some holiday songs for your live band so you can be ready for the season.

Obviously the most important thing is timing when to learn the song. It’s better to learn the song well before your holiday shows. So if you’re planning on playing some Christmas songs in December, it’s a good idea to start learning them in October. By learning the songs that far in advance, you’ll be able to iron out the rough spots and really do a good performance of the song when your holiday shows come. Believe me, your audience will be able to tell if you learned the song 3 days before the show.     (more…)

  • Sunday Funnies – McDonald’s: The Rap

If you’ve ever been to McDonalds you’ll get some pretty good chuckles out of this rap by YouTube user GoRemy. Remy’s rapping is barely passable but he’s got some pretty funny lyrics in this rap. It was funny enough to make it onto this weeks Sunday Funnies on Live Musician Central anyway!

  • A Suggestion On Gifts For Musicians

    Shure Beta 58A

I’ve written many times on Live Musician Central about how important it is for every band member in a live band to do some singing. Whether you’re taking time on lead vocals or simply singing backup, your voice is too valuable of an instrument not to use in your band. There’s one piece of equipment that most musicians always seem to skimp on, and that’s their vocal microphone.

That’s whay I’m suggesting a vocal microphone package as a gift for musicians this year. You’ll be doing the musician in your life a big favor by spending a little cash on a good vocal microphone, mic cable and mic stand. This is a great three piece package for your musician and it’s a gift that will be used for years to come.     (more…)
